Our second Spiderball was bigger and better than the first. Bassnectar spun an insatiable mix of twisted grinding bass and beats while El Circo delighted the masses with, well, El Circo! Jesse Sever laid out his break box in between sets from Laura of El Circo, An-ten-nae, dance from Fey Fusion and much more. With a sold out house the vibe was tight, the masses were throbbing on the floor with two chill rooms to retreat to if you needed a refreshment. JK Sound threw down with a 6 point surround system filling the room with pulsing bass. Beds lined the perimeter with all kinds of shenanigans going on there… This was easily the best Spiderball yet and truly San Francisco’s premier halloween party. The only thing more one could ask, is… What is happening next year? Well, we have locked two artists, more beds, projection art, JK will be back and the show will be as it was last year, bigger, better, and out of sight. Stay tuned for Playaloves Spiderball III, 2008! Details in May.

This year for 2007 Playa Love is eliminating all green house gasses from our conscience through Cooling Man, a non-profit organization dedicated to the efforts of making Black Rock City the first carbon neutral city in the world. It was co-founded by David Shearer and Jeff Cole in an attempt to build bridges between the climate science and art communities to inspire direct climate action by groups and individuals. Cooling Man works through Climate Clean for which David is the chief scientist. Try the Cooling Man GHG calculator to see what your emissions are and how you can negate them for your next burn. David is also directly involved in creating alternative energy for Burning Man including an entire solar array for the man itself. Last year Bently Biofuels powered the man and will be providing more biodiesel this year as well. However Burning Man has a three year plan to provide solar power to Gurlach donated from the new man power array’s making Gurlach the first city in the world to create more energy from the sun than it uses.

We are all very excited about the major efforts to green the burn. Cooling Man makes it easy if you don’t have any means to do so directly. You can either volunteer your time or donate money towards making not only our playa a cleaner, safer environment but the entire world. For more information on Cooling Man visit them on the web and see how you can make a difference.

Not that one, the one about registered trademarks and who owns them, us or Burning Man. Maybe more importantly is who has the right to own them. That is what a federal court will be deciding based on a law suit filed by John Law one of the founding three members of Burning Man against the other two, Larry Harvey and Michael Mikel. The argument is not new, it has made the rounds for years amongst burners but this is the first time it has become real. This will be decided and it will change Burning Man forever, or will it? It might not matter much and then again, it might. Burning Man is fighting hard to keep it’s logo’s and registered names protected from others using them for profit or promotion of “related” events. Burning Man is not a commodity, the logo of the man is as prevalent as the Nike Swish or Apple’s apple. Just like those logo’s the Burning Man logo is seen on clothing, jewelry, stickers, web sites and I even saw it on a dog. The difference is that all those things were given or made with out profit intended. If the logo is allowed to be released to the public without the organization of Burning Man able to police how it is used some, say you for example, could start a festival in the Arizona desert say, and burn things, and call it Burning Man with a little man logo. Worse is that you could sell T-shirts and posters to people who attend for money, which if you are even a halfway decent burner you realize that is blasphemy.

John Law might mean well and he might not. The fact is that he does not get along with his former friends these days, does not attend the event and really doesn’t care about it, or does he? Maybe he wants to preserve the fact that Burning Man belongs to it’s citizens and they will do with it what they will. After all, Burning Man has evolved so much form the early days that it is barely recognizable from it’s origins of Baker Beach, then the early days of the Black Rock desert with people shooting guns. The event has evolved for the better, it is about love and community now with a gift based economy. It is in the eye’s of it’s population a sort of utopia really. The event is it’s people and it’s people will protect the event, they always have and they always will. So bring it on, let’s see how this evolves Burning Man to the next level, it has done nothing but get better every year. Let it burn!

Green is in, it is hip, it is the right thing to do and it is the theme for Burning Man 2007. So, what is your camp doing to green the burn? Picking up MOOP is one thing, but we need to go the extra mile, biodiesel, solar, wind, hamsters in a generated habitrail? Hell, we don’t care, just as long as you don’t burn the fossil fuels for anything but a big ass pyrotechnic fire! It is Burning Man after all. We are trying to reduce the carbon footprint for an event that well, just isn’t that green to begin with. But we aren’t going to stop our burning so we might as well improve how we do it. There are so many ways to green the burn and so many organizations ready to help you do it. Just to name a few Bently Biofuels came out strong and supplied the playa with over 3,350 gallons of biodiesel. They provided 300 gallon tanks delivered to your camp and 5 gallon totes for the personal consumer. Burning Man itself ran their staff commissary, the greeters stations and the man itself purely on biodiesel. In fact, Entheon Village, Ohi Bureau, DisOrient and Hookahdome all burned biodiesel this year.

Greening the Burn is a movement that started years ago and has spawned two major efforts from it’s creation. The Burn Clean Project is one of the most proactive sources of information and action for greening the burn, these folks have been doing it for years. The Evolutionary Center Did everything from helping 16 tons of wood get recycled through Habitat for Humanity to raising consciousness in general through classes offered on the playa. My god, their web site is even solar powered, who can say that… Well, I guess they can.

For 2006, humble little Playa Love burned biodiesel and had our all electric surrey raising dust all over the playa. We even had a solar powered radio, it just didn’t do night time so well… Never mind that, get out that thinking cap, use radiated desert rocks (there are few out there) and get that alternative fuel going. Let’s hear what the Burning Man community has in mind for 2007.
